Aids & Subsidies in 2024 for SMEs

In this article

The transition to a more environmentally-friendly economy is a national priority, particularly highlighted by the "France Relance" recovery plan. Launched in July 2020, this ambitious program aims to stimulate the economy while promoting green initiatives. As part of this plan, ADEME and the French Ministry of Ecological Transition have introduced various grants and subsidies, such as the "Tremplin pour la transition écologique des PME" (springboard for the ecological transition of SMEs), offering subsidies to support small and medium-sized businesses in their decarbonization efforts, or the various Diags from BPIFrance.

Services included in "Tremplin

Subsidies provided by the Springboard for the ecological transition of SMEs "A variety of ecological projects and studies can be co-financed. Eligible services include :

  • Energy renovation work, including insulation and ventilation.
  • Replacing combustion-powered vehicles with electric ones.
  • Eco-design studies.
  • Installation of LED lighting.
  • A carbon footprint.
  • The European Ecolabel label for a product, including a life cycle assessment. It is financed at 80% up to €12,000.

Who is eligible for the springboard grant?

All small and medium-sized businesses, whatever their legal form or sector of activity, are eligible for these subsidies, provided they have less than 250 employees. However, certain specific conditions may apply depending on the type of service requested.

Special case: Carbon balance subsidy

In particular, the subsidy for the carbon footprint is a crucial aid for companies wishing to measure and reduce their carbon footprint. This grant is only available to VSEs and SMEs with fewer than 100 employees and can cover up to 80% of balance sheet costs, up to a maximum of €15,000. If your organization exceeds this number, consider the ACT initiative, which is larger but also more profitable.

💡Even if your company exceeds the established size thresholds, it can still benefit from aid, provided that the total duration of its activity does not exceed two years.. For example, if your company has had 900 employees for just 15 months, it is still eligible for this support. This provides an additional opportunity for growing companies to benefit from support in their ecological transition, even if they temporarily exceed the established size criteria.

Carrying out your Carbon Footprint

Carrying out a certified carbon footprint is part of a sustainable development and corporate social responsibility approach. As well as helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, it strengthens the company's brand image and can attract new talent.

The ACT Method Step by Step: 5 Steps to a Low-Carbon Transition

The transition to a low-carbon economy is a complex process requiring careful planning and total commitment on the part of the company. The ACT Step by Step method offers a structured five-step framework to guide companies through the decarbonization process.

Step 1: Current situation

The aim of this first stage is to carry out a self-diagnosis of the company's initial maturity in terms of decarbonization strategy and practices. This involves assessing the company's greenhouse gas emissions, identifying the main sources of these emissions, and understanding current sustainability practices. This step usually takes from a week to a month, depending on the size and complexity of the company.

Stage 2: Issues and challenges

Once the current situation has been assessed, the next step is to inform the Board of Directors of the company's carbon challenges through the results of a relevant strategy and performance analysis. This analysis helps to determine the main decarbonization challenges facing the company, and to identify opportunities for improvement. This stage can take from one to three months to complete.

Step 3: Vision

The third stage of the ACT Step by Step method consists in building a collective vision of the company's journey towards a low-carbon world. This involves involving internal and external stakeholders in the process of thinking through and creating a shared vision of the company's future. This stage can last from two to six weeks, depending on the complexity of the vision and the level of stakeholder commitment.

Stage 4: New strategy

Once the vision has been established, the next step is to commit to a detailed strategic decarbonization plan, including carbon performance targets. This involves defining specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound (SMART) objectives to guide the company's future decarbonization actions. This step can take from one to three months to complete.

Step 5: Action plan

The final step of the ACT Step by Step method is to convert the detailed strategic plan into concrete actions. This involves defining a specific action plan, with clear milestones, assigned responsibilities and precise deadlines. The action plan must be aligned with the company's decarbonization objectives and integrated into its day-to-day activities. This stage can take from four months to a year to complete, depending on the complexity of the actions to be implemented.

Obtaining a subsidy

To benefit from these subsidies, companies must submit an application to ADEME, specifying their needs and providing the necessary documents. Once the application has been approved, companies receive a first instalment of the subsidy (30%) and the balance (70%) once the investments have been made and certified. These services, in particular the ACT approach, must be carried out by consultants who have received ADEME ACT Evaluation training courseas with Phishia.

For companies wishing to benefit from subsidies, Phishia offers its expertise in drawing up subsidy applications. Prerequisites for the ACT Step by Step approach include the completion of at least one greenhouse gas emissions assessment in line with French regulations, a clear commitment from the board of directors to get involved in the approach, and the appointment of an ACT project coordinator within the company. Phishia can also provide specific training for the ACT project coordinator to ensure the success of the approach.

The transition to a low-carbon economy represents both a challenge and an opportunity for businesses. With the right support and the right practices, they can not only reduce their environmental impact, but also improve their long-term competitiveness.
